Our Process

Our Editorial Process

Every manuscript is different, but here's the shape a typical engagement takes.

01

Manuscript Assessment

We read your full manuscript and identify what level of editing it actually needs, not what a generic package assumes.

02

Editorial Plan

You receive a clear plan covering scope, timeline, and which type of edit — developmental, line, or copy — comes first.

03

Developmental Pass

Your editor addresses structure, pacing, and big-picture issues before a single sentence is polished.

04

Line & Copy Edit

Sentence-level craft, voice consistency, grammar, and style come next, with tracked changes and margin notes.

05

Final Proof & Handoff

A last proofreading pass catches what's left, and you receive a clean manuscript ready for its next step.

FAQ

Editing FAQ

What's the difference between developmental, line, and copy editing?

Developmental editing addresses structure, pacing, and big-picture storytelling. Line editing refines voice and sentence-level craft. Copy editing corrects grammar, punctuation, and consistency. Most manuscripts benefit from more than one pass.

How long does editing take?

A full-length manuscript typically takes four to ten weeks depending on how many rounds it needs and how developmental the first pass has to be.

Will my voice survive the editing process?

That's the goal of every edit we make. Our editors work to sharpen what's already on the page, not overwrite it with their own style.

Can I choose which level of edit I need?

Yes. After an initial read, we'll recommend a scope, but the final decision on what to include is always yours.

Do you edit differently for traditional publishing versus self-publishing?

Yes. A manuscript headed to literary agents is edited with submission standards in mind; a self-published title gets additional attention to formatting and reader experience.

What file formats do you accept?

Word documents with tracked changes are standard, though we can accommodate Google Docs and other formats on request.
